When Should Utilities be Installed in a Building Project?

When it comes to commencing a new construction project, you might be unsure when utilities should be installed. We’ll go through when the ideal time is to install new utility networks and how they’re usually installed.

When should you install new utility networks

Normally, when the building’s structure is complete but before the drywall is installed, basic lines are laid out before the permanent and final heating, plumbing, and electrical networks are made.

The contractors will draw in the lines to demonstrate where wires, ducts, and pipes will be installed using the utility connection company’s plans.

This allows them to collaborate with the utility company to ensure that all the systems are compatible and to discuss the best installation methods.

This is known as the rough-in, and it is critical for the construction to go smoothly. The construction can go wrong if the rough-in isn’t done correctly. After the rough-in stage, the utility gas, water, and electricity networks must be installed.

What is the best order to install utility networks?

Gas Networks

Gas networks are usually the first to be installed. This stage involves a variety of processes including designing a gas network, installation and construction of infrastructure and new gas mains or services installation.

At Phoenix Utilities, we have a highly experienced and skilled team, providing gas network design and construction expertise which is highly beneficial to our clients.

For the benefit of our customers, we ensure cost savings as well as minimal impact to local communities. Phoenix Utilities has an in-depth knowledge both industry and regulatory.

Our team have the expertise to design gas networks into locations including reinforcements and diversions. To again benefit our customers with cost savings as well as minimal impact to local communities, our design team use trench-less technologies.

Water Networks

The water network, which includes hot and cold-water pipes to all bathrooms and the kitchen, must be connected after the gas has been installed. This service involves water network design, chlorination and pressure testing, project management, and replacement of mains/services.

Our team here at Phoenix Utilities are made up of experienced individuals in the industry, assigned to roles specifically committed to water network design. As part of the water design process, we design and cost the water infrastructure to meet the requirements of every project. We manage the whole process including communicating with our internal operations and site team.

Furthermore, the installation of the full network framework of water mains and services by Phoenix Utilities includes excavate, backfilling and re-instatement.

We are registered on the (MURS) Multi-Utilities Recognition Status providers website as part of our WIRS accreditation.

Electrical Networks

Electricity networks are normally the last to be connected, though it’s worth noting that the majority of the wiring process can’t begin until the home has dried in. This is when the house is finished to the point where it can withstand wind, rain, and other elements of the weather. This includes Electrical Design, Cable Laying (up to 33kV), Substation Installation and Cable Jointing.

Phoenix Utilities Ltd are fully accredited to design projects in the Industrial, Commercial and Domestic sectors up to and including 11kV substation design. We also are accredited for cable laying up to 33kV which includes multicore and single core cabling to various specifications and manufacturers.

We design, procure, install and pre commission a range of substations to meet each project’s needs, and can complete both Live and non-Live LV cable jointing across various DNO/IDNO networks utilising various specification and manufacturers of cable joints.

At Phoenix Utilities Ltd, we provide a range of Civils, GasElectric and Water design. We also offer installation of mains and services both in the private and public sectors across the UK.
